Residence Permit for University Graduates and Researchers

Do you currently hold a residence permit and have you just successfully completed your studies or scientific research? What comes next? This is often the period when you begin planning your next steps and future direction in the Czech Republic.

For this transitional period after graduation or completion of scientific research, there is a specific type of residence permit intended for job seeking purposes.

Who is this permit intended for?

A residence permit for the purpose of seeking employment is intended for:

• recent graduates of accredited university study programs who hold a long-term residence permit for the purpose of studies,
• holders of a long-term residence permit who have just completed scientific research for which their residence permit was originally issued.

How long is the permit issued for, and when should you apply?

A residence permit for the purpose of seeking employment is issued for a maximum period of 9 months.

However, the timing of your application is crucial. Although the law does not explicitly set a deadline, the Ministry of the Interior follows a 30-day rule in practice. Therefore, it is advisable to submit your application within 30 calendar days of passing your final examinations, not from the date you receive your diploma.

What happens if you apply later than 30 days?

This situation can be quite complicated. The law works with the concept of “failure to fulfill the purpose of stay.”

In practice, this means that although the law does not explicitly prescribe a specific deadline for submitting an application for a residence permit for job-seeking purposes, the authorities may consider the fact that you have not been fulfilling the original purpose of your stay in the Czech Republic for some time. This may serve as grounds for rejecting your application or even cancelling your residence permit.

The Ministry of the Interior assesses these cases individually, and no clear official position has been issued so far. For this reason, it is safer to follow the recommended 30-day period.

It is equally important to submit your application while your current residence permit is still valid!

Practical examples

Example 1

Your residence permit for study purposes is valid until 31 August 2026, and you graduated from university on 15 June 2026.

In this case, you must submit your application no later than 15 July 2026.

Example 2

Your residence permit is valid until 31 January 2026, and you graduate from university on 15 January 2026.

In this case, you do not have the full 30 days to submit your application and must file it no later than 31 January 2026, before your current residence permit expires.

What documents will be needed?

When applying for a residence permit for the purpose of seeking employment, you should prepare the following documents:

• a valid travel document,
• a completed application form for a long-term residence permit,
• a passport-size photograph,
• proof of graduation or completion of scientific research (the document must clearly show the date of graduation or completion of research),
• a bank statement in the applicant’s name,
• proof of accommodation,
• valid health insurance covering the expected period of stay, or the validity period of the residence permit.
