EU Registration Certificate: A Small Step with Big Benefits
Are you moving to the Czech Republic or planning to stay for more than a few months? You may have come across the term EU Registration Certificate. It’s not mandatory, but it can make your life significantly easier. Let’s take a closer look at why.
Do I Need It?
Short answer: you don’t.
As an EU citizen, you have the right to freely enter and reside in the Czech Republic without limitation. The only requirement is to report your place of residence to the Foreign Police within 30 days of arrival.
However, if you plan to stay longer than 3 months, you can apply for the certificate. It's voluntary.
Interesting note: The obligation to register is expected to return with the new Foreigners Act from 2029.
How Does It Work in Practice?
The whole process is simpler than you might expect and in most cases, you can complete it without visiting an office in person, at least when it come to submission of your application.
What Do You Need?
- a completed application form
- 1 passport-sized photo
- a valid ID (passport or national ID, choose the one with longer validity)
- proof of purpose of stay (e.g. employment contract, marriage certificate, or a simple affidavit confirming your intention to stay in the Czech Republic for more than 3 months)
- proof of accommodation (rental agreement or confirmation from the landlord)
- travel health insurance
- administrative fee of CZK 200
How Long Is It Valid?
The certificate is valid for 10 years, so once it’s done, you’re set for the long term.
